PRINCIPLE 2: REFLECTIVE PRACTICE

The ability of teachers to step outside of the experiences that make up teaching and to analyze and critique from multiple perspectives the impact of these experiences and contexts.

This principle is demonstrated by the ability to:

  • explain the principles that guide teaching

  • demonstrate teaching as an inquiry process, collecting and analyzing data about students' learning and generating plans designed to support student understanding

  • entertain multiple perspectives

  • self-assess from  multiple perspectives

  • collect information through observation of classroom interaction

  • assess learners' development and knowledge

  • use assessment processes appropriate to learning outcomes

  • invite learners to employ multiple approaches, solutions, and diverse pathways to learning

Evidence #1: Focus Student Report

During college, I worked with several students in Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) prior to my student teaching placement. I spent several hours with a 3rd grade student, Jeremy, to work on reading and math strategies. The two documents attached below are detailed reports on Jeremy's reading abilities. I talked with Jeremy, practiced various reading strategies with him, and  observed him reading. In addition, I formally analyzed Jeremy's reading skills through a type of assessment called miscue analysis. This assessment method is research-based and an extremely effective way to analyze and develop next steps to help struggling readers. Please read through the attached documents to learn more about this assessment method, which I plan to incorporate into my classroom.

Evidence #2: Student Teaching Part 1 Reflection

At my college, IUPUI, student teaching is divided into two parts. For the first eight weeks, I worked in a 4th grade math classroom. At the end of my first part of student teaching, I reflected on my teaching by explaining what I learned and what challenges I faced in the classroom. Please read through the attached document and explore our student teaching website to learn more about how I am a reflective educator who always strives to improve.
