PRINCIPLE 5: UNDERSTANDING SCHOOL IN THE CONTEXT OF SOCIETY AND CULTURE

The ability of teachers to value and to teach about diversity, inclusivity, and equity; to recognize the impact of social, cultural, economic, linguistic, geographic, and political systems on daily school life; and to capitalize on the potential of school to minimize inequities.

This principle is demonstrated by the ability to:

  • act as a change agent

  • communicate in ways that demonstrate a sensitivity to a broad range of diversity

  • mediate when learners need help to resolve problems or change attitudes

  • collaborate with parents, teachers, administrators, and other community members involved in the lives of students

  • embed knowledge of community into teaching

  • challenge negative attitudes

Evidence #1: English Language Learners & Literacy Presentation

As part of one of my college classes, I worked as part of a group to research and present over the dimensions of literacy as they apply to English Language Learners (ELLs). Please browse through the presentation to learn more about the dimensions of literacy and how teachers can help ELLs in the reading classroom.

Evidence #2: Classroom Newsletter

Parents and families of students should be kept informed about classroom and school events, so a newsletter can be sent home each month. The newsletter will inform families about current units of study, upcoming events, and important announcements. In addition to sending a paper copy of the newsletter home, it can be posted to the classroom website and/or emailed to parents. It can also be translated into the family's home language if needed. Please look through the attached newsletter to see how I would structure my classroom newsletter.
